The Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) was established in 1945 and has been housed since then on Erjavčeva Street. It comprises 4 academic departments and offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Graduate study courses take 4 years to complete and can be taken as full-time, part-time (1 to 3 vacancies) or parallel studies. They are held within the framework of 6 study programmes: 3 at the Design Department (Visual Communication, Industrial Design and Unique Design), and 3 more at the Departments of Painting, Sculpture and Restoration respectively. After completing their graduate studies, students can enrol in postgraduate studies within several programmes.

Each year the academy also organises many different workshops and also runs two 45-hour preparatory courses in drawing and sculpture for academy entry exams, plus a range of additional visual arts education programmes aimed at a wide group of interested people. The academy enables students to study abroad through the SOCRATES/ERASMUS and CEEPUS programmes and on the basis of a bilateral contract with some European universities (in Vienna, Linz, Genk, Helsinki, Milano, Lisbona, Essen, etc.) and with some American universities (Indiana University of Pennsylvania).

Academy of Fine Arts and Design collaborated with Faculty of Computer and Information Science on a platform called ArtNetLab which was an autonomous producer for new media and computer arts in Slovenia. ArtNetLab was an experimental unit which was connecting art and science, through the presentation of techno-performances utilizing interactive devices, projects developed as open source art, and interactive Internet-based art video projects. Many of the projects of ArtNetLab have been developed in collaboration with mentors Franc Solina from the Computer Vision Laboratory at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science and Srečo Dragan from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

ALUO is a member of CUMULUS – International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media.
